## How Can I Have a Popup Display Only Once per Session Instead of Opening on Every Page Load?

### Use a Cookie

The short answer: use a [cookie](https://wppopupmaker.com/docs/getting-started/popup-maker-glossary-of-terms/#cookies) 🍪. A cookie tells Popup Maker not to show that same popup again for a while — sorta like saying, “Hey, website. I just signed up for your newsletter. Please don’t ask me to sign up again 😉.”

You can set up a cookie for your popup right when you add a trigger, or by editing an existing trigger. Let's cover the "editing" way, since that's the most general option.

#### Set Up a Popup Cookie

1. Edit your popup.
2. Go to **Popup Settings** > **Triggers**.
3. Click the *pencil* ![File W5Cpfgpufj](https://s3.amazonaws.com/helpscout.net/docs/assets/559c68b9e4b03e788eda1692/images/633ae0363f38fe1e468631b8/file-w5cpfGpuFJ.png) icon in the **Actions** column for the trigger you want to add the cookie.
4. Click inside the **Cookie Name** field and select **Add New Cookie**.
5. Click **Update**.
6. Select when you want the popup to create the cookie. The default is **On Popup Close**.
7. Click **Add**.
8. Change the **Cookie Name** and **Cookie Time** (how long to stop displaying the cookie to the same person) if you want.
9. Click **Update**.
10. Click **Update** for your popup to save all your changes.

## How Can I Create a Cookie When Someone Submits a Form?

To make sure people who already filled out your form don't see that popup again, you can [create a cookie on form submission](https://wppopupmaker.com/docs/form-submit-actions/close-popup-and-create-cookie-after-forms-submission/#create-a-cookie-on-form-submit). With [form plugins integrated with Popup Maker](/docs/forms-and-integrations/faq-forms-and-integrations#what-wordpress-form-builder-plugins), this works a lot like [setting up any other popup cookie](#set-up-a-popup-cookie), with two differences:

- When you click **Add New Cookie**, select the form in your popup first.
- Set **When** to create the cookie to **Form Submission** instead of the default **On Popup Close**.

Then connect that cookie to your trigger the same way: click the pencil icon for your trigger and select your new **Form Submission** cookie in the **Cookie Name** field. Click **Update** to save everything.

This prevents annoying repeat visitors who already completed your form.
