## What are Customer Targeting Rules?

**Think of LifterLMS Customer Targeting Rules as smart filters** that show popups based on customer purchase history, lifetime value, and subscription status to deliver personalized upsells and retention offers.

### Here's an example

You can show VIP offers to high-value customers, send retention campaigns to subscribers with upcoming renewals, or recommend complementary courses to customers who purchased specific access plans.

### Where do I find these Targeting Rules?

When you [create or edit a Popup Maker popup](https://wppopupmaker.com/docs/getting-started/create-your-first-popup-summary-guide/), go to **Popup Settings** > **Targeting**. Click the dropdown to see all available LifterLMS customer targeting rules.

![Scroll to see LifterLMS Customer targeting rules in the dropdown](https://wppopupmaker.com/wp-content/uploads/lifterlms-customer-targeting-rules.png)

Always remember to **Publish** or **Save** your popup after you're done editing and adding targeting rules.

Let's cover each LifterLMS customer targeting rule you can use in Popup Maker. Here we go!

## Customer Lifetime Value

Use the **Customer Lifetime Value** targeting rule to show popups based on how much a customer has spent with you over time.

This is perfect for rewarding high-value customers with VIP offers or encouraging low-spenders with introductory promotions.

### 1. Click Customer Lifetime Value from the dropdown

![Select Customer Lifetime Value from the LifterLMS targeting rules dropdown menu](https://wppopupmaker.com/wp-content/uploads/select-customer-lifetime-value.png)

### 2. Enter More than value (optional)

Enter a number for the minimum lifetime spending. The customer's total spending must exceed this amount to match.

### 3. Enter Less than value (optional)

Enter a number for the maximum lifetime spending. The customer's total spending must be less than this amount to match.

You can use both fields together to create a range (e.g., between $250 and $1000).

### Common Use Cases

- **More than 500**: Show VIP upsell for high-value customers
- **Less than 100**: Show introductory offer for low-spenders
- **More than 250, less than 1000**: Show mid-tier loyalty offer

## Customer Has Purchased

Use the **Customer Has Purchased** targeting rule to show popups based on which access plans a customer has previously purchased.

This is ideal for cross-selling and upselling to customers based on their purchase history.

### 1. Click Customer Has Purchased from the dropdown

![Select Customer Has Purchased from the LifterLMS targeting rules dropdown menu](https://wppopupmaker.com/wp-content/uploads/select-customer-has-purchased.png)

### 2. Select one or more access plans

Click **Select Access Plans** to select one or more access plans that the customer should have purchased.

### 3. Click Require all (optional)

If you select multiple access plans, check **Require all** to require the customer to have purchased ALL access plans. Leave it unchecked if you want the customer to have purchased ANY of the selected plans.

### Common Use Cases

- Target customers who bought the "Beginner Plan" to upsell the "Advanced Plan"
- Target customers who purchased both "Course A" and "Course B" to recommend "Course C"
- Target customers who bought ANY premium plan

## Customer Subscription Status

Use the **Customer Subscription Status** targeting rule to show popups based on a customer's subscription status for specific access plans.

This is perfect for retention campaigns, renewal reminders, and upselling to active subscribers.

**Note:** When using the "Renewal upcoming" status, you must specify the number of days (1-90) until renewal to be considered "upcoming".

### 1. Click Customer Subscription Status from the dropdown

### 2. Select one or more subscription access plans

Click **Select Access Plans** to select one or more subscription access plans to check.

### 3. Choose a subscription status

From the **Status** dropdown, select either:

- **Active**: Subscription currently active
- **Renewal upcoming**: Subscription renewing soon

### 4. Enter Renewal Days (conditional)

If you selected the "Renewal upcoming" status, enter a number between 1 and 90 to specify how many days before renewal to consider "upcoming".

### 5. Click Require all (optional)

If you select multiple access plans, check **Require all** if you want the customer's subscription status to match for ALL access plans. Leave it unchecked if you want to match ANY access plan.

### Common Use Cases

- **Status: Active**: Show additional course offer to active subscribers
- **Status: Renewal upcoming, Renewal days: 7**: Show retention offer 7 days before renewal
- **Status: Renewal upcoming, Renewal days: 30**: Show early renewal incentive 30 days out
- Target customers whose subscription for both "Plan A" AND "Plan B" is active
